Hebrew is a remarkable language. It is the language of the Bible, and uniquely, a language that was once largely lost as a spoken tongue and later revived by a small group of Jews whose determination ensured it would live again. Learning Hebrew has brought new depth to our understanding of Scripture and enriched our lives in ways that are difficult to measure.

Initially, the focus was on Biblical Hebrew. After spending time in the Land, it became clear that learning Modern Hebrew also held great value, particularly for engaging with everyday life and conversation. A foundation in Modern Hebrew often opens the door to recognising elements of Biblical Hebrew as well.

Learning to read Hebrew can come surprisingly quickly; developing comprehension, however, takes time and patience. While formal lessons are not always possible, there are many excellent teachers and resources available. The recommendations shared here are offered as helpful starting points for those who wish to explore the Hebrew language further.

“The Hebrew language will go from the synagogue to the house of study, and from the house of study to the school, and from the school it will come into the home and… become a living language.” — Eliezer Ben‑Yehuda
